Billboard

Cities on the Move I

The eighth project in the "Billboard" series of exhibitions from museum in progress was designed by the Thai artists Navin Rawanchaikul and Rirkrit Tiravanija. Their narrative paintings in the of Asian film posters illustrate a fictional love story between a tuk-tuk driver from Bangkok and a girl from Vienna. The pictures, which were produced in Bangkok, were partly based on photographs of employees of museum in progress and the Vienna Secession.

The billboard "Cities on the Move I" was produced in co-operation with the Vienna Secession to coincide with the "Cities on the Move" exhibition taking place there (26-11-1997 to 18-01-1998, curated by Hou Hanru and Hans-Ulrich Obrist) and was realised in co-operation with gewista, Europlakat, artpool and the daily newspaper, DER STANDARD. The billboards were shown on about 500 billboards in Vienna and approximately 200 in ten other European cities including Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, Bratislava and Sarajevo from December 1997 to January 1998.
