A programme to determine the position of art and artistic activity in the context of contemporary society.
"the mission of art" made this question the central theme of a series of theoretical discourses, presentations of work, workshops and discussion events at the Academy of Applied Art in Vienna (symposium from 11–12 May 2001; workshops from March to June 2001). The position of the visual arts in contemporary society was examined through analyses in the fields of aesthetics, the theory of art, communication sciences and artistic practice. Artists, critics, theoreticians and intermediaries were invited to discussions at a central symposium. A series of workshops presenting artistic work processes and concepts added a practical context to the theoretical discourse.
