"We always want to speak German", and "Please always speak German with me" are phrases from a 1970s language course record titled "Practical German for Turks" (published by Amerikan Nesriyat Bürosu). Fatih Aydoğdu discovered this record at a flea market in Istanbul and used it as the basis for an exploration of language, discourse, and ideology. The language spoken by "all of us" serves as a central medium for constructing national unity and identity. Those who "do not belong to us" are taught phrases such as: "My passport is in perfect order. I am travelling alone."
