Worlds of Work

Schnitzel Company

"Schnitzel Company" by the Canadian artist Ken Lum is the eleventh billboard exhibition in the course of the exhibition series "Worlds of Work" by museum in progress in cooperation with the Vienna Chamber of Labour. The exhibition was presented from June – August 2004 in front of the buildings of the Vienna Chamber of Labour (1040 Wien, Prinz Eugenstraße 20–22 and Plößlgasse 13). The work was also presented in the daily newspaper DER STANDARD and on INFOSCREENs in the Vienna subway-system.

Car dealers have them, banks and hotels, supermarkets and fast food chains have them: the employee of the month. The Canadian artist Ken Lum takes up the feelgood factor as real satire. In cheerful harmony the staff of a fictive "Schnitzel Company" abide by corporate and marketing strategies. They are certain of the gratitude of the company. Ken Lum is concerned with the question of how people interact. Social conditions, the dynamics of ethnic groupings and the existential conditions of urban co-existence are the themes of a work which firstly involves itself with local conditions to then make generally valid social analyses.
