I had the very good fortune to collaborate with museum in progress on their remarkable Safety Curtain project at the Vienna State Opera in the early years of its inception, having helped with presentations of images by Kara Walker and Matthew Barney. Dedicated to energizing a broad public with the catalyzing potential of contemporary art outside the confines of a traditional brick-and-mortar site, museum in progress introduces, with the still-ongoing curtain project, radical, unexpected imagery into a cultural institution that relies largely on known and beloved repertory. I have always loved the idea of unsuspecting audiences having an encounter with a stunning visual, often imbued with great meaning, even before the opera begins.
