Statement by Hou Hanru

On the occasion of 'Cities on the Move', 1997, I had a chance to meet with Kathrin Messner and Josef Ortner and work with them on realizing a series of collaboration projects with international artists, especially those from Asia. museum in progress has been real avant-garde in terms of curatorial vision and strategy. It was one of the first 'institutions' exploring the media and its public impact – long before the age of digital social media today. By incorporating the widest range of pre-digital social media, from the smallest announcement in a local newspaper to the largest advertisement billboards in the streets of metropolitan cities, via special issues of magazines, etc. museum in progress opened a totally new space and set an infinite format of open space for contemporary creation. Its influences are long lasting and profound for many, especially those involved directly with its projects. And it makes us progress every day!
