The project Printed Matter coincided with the development of the Museumsquartier in Vienna and the expectations and hopes connected with it. In order to publicise these ideas, which extended far beyond the former imperial stables, now appropriated for cultural activities, eight artists were requested to design posters on the subject of the Museumsquartier as a work in progress. Their critical and provocative commentaries were conceived as "food for thought". It was by no means clear at the time what tasks and functions the Museumsquartier would perform. It was a time for discussions, plans and development.
