"raise the dead" by Douglas Gordon was created for the "Large Scale Picture" exhibition series on the facade of the Kunsthalle Vienna. The picture shows a wall with "raise the dead" written on it in white letters, which is, "a perfectly simple phrase but is a completely anti-social, pagan, anti-twentieth century It goes against the rationale which modern cities have been built on." (Douglas Gordon)
"raise the dead" could be seen from August 1996 until November 1996, in the format of 10m x 54m. The project with Hans-Ulrich Obrist as curator was realised in co-operation with the company Beko, and the Austrian Federal Curator Markus Brüderlin (Ministry of Science, Research and Art).
