Portraits of Artists 78

The reason I work in so many different ways is because I don't believe in any of them. In the seventies, Dore Ashton wrote a book on Philip Guston. It was titled "Yes, But" – that was the whole title – and I thought this was a really good description of the painterly condition. Every time there's a "yes", there's always that "but" that goes along with it. (Christopher Wool)
