The Austrian artist Rudi Molacek, long-time resident of New York, was selected for the seventh project in the "Billboard" series of exhibitions. The poster he designed is taken from a black and white photo taken from a moving car showing traffic in Shanghai. In variable configurations, repetitions and reflections of parts or the whole photo, the density of traffic in Asian cities becomes apparent; speed and mobility are the themes.
The billboard "Cities on the Move II" was produced in co-operation with Austrian Airlines and gewista as well as the Vienna Secession to coincide with the "Cities on the Move" exhibition taking place there (26-11-1997 to 18-01-1998, curated by Hou Hanru and Hans-Ulrich Obrist). It was shown on approximately 3,000 billboards in Vienna from December 1997 to January 1998.
"Cities On the Move II" was awarded the Gustav Klimt Prize 1998 as one of the best billboards from 1997 in the special category "Original Poster Art" following the proposal of an independent jury.
