Statement by Chris Dercon

Now that many are trying to imagine what a 'post-Covid Museum' should be like, I cannot stop thinking that museum in progress invented such 'other' museum already a long time ago. While finally able to sort out my library and archives during the long period of confinement, I stumbled upon astonishingly timely works of art produced and presented by museum in progress. Such as Gerhard Richter’s images on the pages of profil in 1996, its numbers 22–25, from the series 'Travelling Eye'. Inserted in between illustrated reports about the new nationalism in the Czech Republic and the mortal crash of a Lauda airplane in Thailand, Richter’s clotted image connects and underlines the threat felt in the printed photographs.
