Statement by Tacita Dean

I have worked with museum in progress twice now. In 2002, I used my found postcard project “Washington Cathedral” to make a double-page spread in the daily newspapers “Süddeutsche Zeitung” and “Der Standard” for their “With an Open Mind – Tolerance and Diversity” exhibition. Later I worked on their “Safety Curtain” project for the Vienna State Opera. Again, I used a found image, to create a fictional scene from the play “Antigone”, which was one of the earliest manifestations of a long-held fascination with the subject that has recently become a major film work for me. I enjoy these invitations to intervene into less obvious arenas for art, such as inside a newspaper and within an opera house, and it is great that museum in progress continues to find new venues and formats for artists to work in.
