raising flags Catalogue

The project raising flags by museum in progress takes a stance in a time of profound societal upheaval, increasing conflicts, and political tensions. Curated by Alois Herrmann and Kaspar Mühlemann Hartl, it marks a discursive space with approximately 70 works by 38 international artists that address socio-political issues and encourage reflection. Historically often associated with territorial claims and exclusion, the flag undergoes an artistic transformation through raising flags: It shifts from a symbol of exclusion to an open signal of diverse artistic expressions – inclusive and uniting.

Featuring flags by Thomas Bayrle, Cao Shu, Pablo Chiereghin, Minerva Cuevas, Christian Eisenberger, Mounir Fatmi, John Gerrard, Martin Grandits, Shilpa Gupta, Wade Guyton, Peter Jellitsch, Anna Jermolaewa, Miriam Jonas, Martha Jungwirth, Maureen Kägi, Gerhard Kaiser, Jitish Kallat, Samson Kambalu, Peter Kogler, Agnieszka Kurant, Jonathan Meese, Jonathan Monk, Maurizio Nannucci, Olaf Nicolai, Sarah Ortmeyer, Saskia Pintelon, Sophia Pompéry, Laure Prouvost, Haleh Redjaian, Christian Robert-Tissot, Hans Schabus, Eva Schlegel, Kathrin Stumreich / Philip Leitner, Sun Xun, Chandraguptha Thenuwara, Grazia Toderi and Erwin Wurm.

The publication was made possible by the Art Section of the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, civil Service ans Sport (BMKÖS) and by the support of Bildrecht.
