ALTER ECO

As part of the Climate Biennale Vienna 2026, museum in progress is presenting a total of ten flags by Romuald Hazoumè on Aspernbrücke, Stubenbrücke, and the Wien City boat station at Schwedenplatz, featuring symbols based on Fâ – a centuries-old system of knowledge and divination from the Yoruba-speaking cultures of West Africa, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage. Each symbol refers to its own meaning:

LIFE I am the circle of the beginning. A perfect form. My motto is: “Lightning never strikes the little mouse at the heart of the mountain.” It means that every species on Earth has the right to live, and that nature grants the same place to all beings.

DEATH I am not just any death; I am the death that breathes life anew. For I am bound to the Python serpent. When a people lose a war, they depart with their pythons cradled in their arms. Far from the battlefield, they set them free. Where the serpents have spent the night, a well is dug, and around it, the new village takes shape. The python seeks out the hidden moisture and guides us to water. It is for this reason that Python became a living deity.

THE WOMAN My motto is: “A woman who wears a garment sewn from a cloth of the highest quality does not step into a thicket of thorns.” I am not merely important – I am sacred. Illness cannot touch me, disputes are kept from me, death is kept at bay. I do not only give life; I carry it. I am the womb, the origin of all being.

THE SPIRAL I am the first movement. Without me, nothing else exists. I am the being that moves and sets all in motion. Some peoples see in me a mythical Python serpent, keeper of the fertile rain, the words that grant wholeness.

THE FERTILITY OF THE SOIL I am the world of the ancestors. I symbolise fertility and the richness of the soil.

FERTILITY I am the cavity that receives and creates, a symbol of fertility among all human, animal, and plant species. My presence nourishes the world.

THE FIRE OF THE SKY I am the symbol of lightning, the very fire of the heavens. Red is my passion, blood my sustaining stream, yet I protect my own.

AIR I am the supreme symbol of the 16 mother signs of Fâ, the breath of divinatory geomancy. I am the most tolerant of all. Red does not please me, yet I bend to it when compelled, while the calm of blue restores my spirit. Without me, life itself would not endure.

KNOWLEDGE Smallpox bears its marks in tiny dots, once endured, never repeated – thus knowledge is born. I am the memory of ancestors, the memory of the hearth. I answer questions with unwavering certainty. I never stray far from my own, for I am the symbol of knowledge. I am the Earth itself, steadfast and enduring.

REST I dwell in repose. I am the death of man, yet my spirit burns eternal. It returns among the living, finding reflection in the souls of a chosen few.
