For the project raising flags by museum in progress, Ghada Amer created four flags that inscribe pointed political messages into the public space of Vienna. Each flag combines a striking statement with a deliberate chromatic scheme:
NO EMPIRE LASTS FOREVER – quotes Krishna Udayasankar, echoing the US flag
EVERY NATION THAT SLEEPS IN FREEDOM WILL WAKE UP IN SLAVERY – referencing the work of French philosopher Alain (Émile-Auguste Chartier), inspired by the colours of the EU flag
YOUR IGNORANCE IS THEIR POWER – anonymous, referencing the colours of the Burkina Faso flag
WE WILL NOT BE SILENT – in Arabic, anonymous, drawing on the symbolism of the Palestinian flag
Through her poetic and political gestures, Amer reclaims the national flag as a site of resistance and visibility – shifting it away from its conventional function and reimagining it as a transgressive, transcultural, and feminist emblem. By situating her interventions within the urban landscape, on the Stubenbrücke, Amer opens a mindspace for transnational reflection and collective consciousness.

In 2026, the flag No Empire Lasts Forever by Ghada Amer was invited to the Biennale Innsbruck International and presented at the Biennale Centre at Marktplatz. And the flag Every nation that sleeps in freedom will wake up in slavery was shown at the Cēsis art festival in Latvia.
