For the project raising flags by museum in progress, Ghada Amer created four flags that inscribe pointed political messages into the public space of Vienna. Each flag combines a striking statement with a deliberate chromatic scheme:
NO EMPIRE LASTS FOREVER – quotes Krishna Udayasankar, echoing the US flag
EVERY NATION THAT SLEEPS IN FREEDOM WILL WAKE UP IN SLAVERY – referencing the work of French philosopher Alain (Émile-Auguste Chartier), inspired by the colours of the EU flag
YOUR IGNORANCE IS THEIR POWER – anonymous, referencing the colours of the Burkina Faso flag
WE WILL NOT BE SILENT – in Arabic, anonymous, drawing on the symbolism of the Palestinian flag
Through her poetic and political gestures, Amer reclaims the national flag as a site of resistance and visibility – shifting it away from its conventional function and reimagining it as a transgressive, transcultural, and feminist emblem. By situating her interventions within the urban landscape, on the Stubenbrücke, Amer opens a mindspace for transnational reflection and collective consciousness.
The artworks by Ghada Amer are available as a signed and numbered screen prints in the format 59.5 x 59.5 cm. Further information and orders at: www.mip.at/en/shop/amer-screen-prints.
In 2026, the flag by Ghada Amer was invited to the Biennale Innsbruck International and presented at the Biennale Centre at Marktplatz.
