I think people are used to sensory deprivation. I think that a lot of art is visually deprived. There is a lot of deprivation in terms of what people have to experience and look at. The reason why I try to push things in this way is that I want to inhabit a place that I feel is giving more to the world than perhaps other work. It isn't a question of beauty or aesthetics or taste really, it has to do with a kind of emotional energy. (Philip Taaffe)
