Throughout his career Michael Craig-Martin has explored the expressive potential of commonplace objects and images. One of his best-known artworks is "An Oak Tree" of 1973, in which he claimes to have transformed a glass of water into an oak tree. The Irish conceptual artist and painter lives and works in London. Retrospectives of his work were presented at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London in 1989 and at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2006. With "1917. Rietveld/Duchamp" Craig-Martin opens the ten-part exhibition series "Layers of Time" in DATUM.
